Tulips require ground that does not retain much water, because with prolonged exposure to water in the ground they tend to rot. When tulips begin to die in the summer, it's important to leave them until they have all become brown. This ripens the soil for the next year, and also allows the tulips to live to their full life span. Be sure to rake away the browned and dead parts of tulips in June or July.

Tulips require a period of cold while they're dormant and resting between shows. That means you must plant before freezing weather, and then get your great display in the spring weeks of color if you know your tulips and plant early and late ones, and a lot of middle-between. The ground should be moist when tulips are planted. Tulips should not have too much moisture before they have made roots; in that condition they are easy victims to rot or other infections.

When planting tulips, you should always place the pointed end up in the ground. Tulips planted deeper have thicker stems and fall over less often. When planting tulips, it is a good idea to place them close to one another to avoid having them standing by themselves in the spring. You can place bulbs as close as six inches away from each other in the ground, and for long rows of tulips, you might want to dig a trench to plant them in.

Perennial Tulips can put on a stunning display for several years with the proper tulip planting and care. Small species Tulips are ideal for rock gardens and the tall, large-flowered varieties can hold their own anywhere. Tulips perform best in full sun in the North and will tolerate very light shade in hotter areas. A safe and easy way to use tulips is in front of evergreens, at the foot of trees, or beside walks. This way the tulips are framed and you need not worry that after June the space is bare.
